It’s a great advantage in sport to be able to move a fraction of a second more quickly than your opponent, as in many instances it determines the difference between winning and losing. Certainly, some athletes are genetically gifted with speed or a high percentage of fast twitch muscles responsible for explosive muscle actions that allow them to run fast. Nonetheless, each of us has a certain percentage of fast twitch muscle fibres for explosive muscle actions and slow twitch muscle fibres for more endurance related activities.
In order to maximise our speed potential, I have designed a 6-Stage Fastfeet® Speed for Sport™ Training Model that incorporates a step-by-step plan of the whole training cycle an athlete undertakes at each training session. By applying the speed and technique training drills in Speed for Sport™ you will learn how to train your body to activate your fast twitch muscle fibres in order to maximise your speed potential. More importantly you will learn 6-Stages of speed development that will take you to a new level of fitness and lightning quick speed. These include:
• Stage 1: Pre-activity exercises
• Stage 2: Proper warm-up sequence including dynamic exercises
• Stage 3: Main activity speed drills, skills and intervals including pure speed and equipment-based agility training
• Stage 4: An effective cool down and stretching routines
• Stage 5: Recovery phases including the revolutionary Spinal Unloading Block®
• Stage 6: Ongoing maintenance phase for effective body management and testing throughout the year.
Whilst the body needs to train fast to be fast, it also needs phases of support that the 6-Stage Fastfeet® Speed for Sport™ Training Model offers in order to optimise overall speed potential. By improving ones knowledge and understanding of your body, together with speed, agility, reaction and quickness drills and recovery methods you create a pathway of success. This is because speed elements can be taught and developed, as running is a skill that can be learnt.
Speed for Sport™ focuses on breaking down the skill of running and introducing a series of drills for improving straight, lateral and multi-directional movement patterns for the beginner and advanced. Applying these drills as part of the 6-Stage Fastfeet® Speed for Sport™ Program on a regular basis allows old habits to be broken and new ones to stick.
Incorporating proper technique and speed drills as outlined can enhance the development of power and improve biomechanical efficiency. The more biomechanically correct your body becomes, the smoother your running movements will be resulting in greater speed and efficiency as you become fitter and stronger. The more efficient you are the less energy you use, resulting in increased ability to sustain faster speeds over set distances.
